About Holy Ship! January Kick-Off Party!
Justin initially pricked the ears of the electronic music community in 2003 with his first record 'The Sad Piano' on Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly label. Everyone in the electronic music food chain got involved, from the A list DJs like Derrick Carter and Pete Tong that were playing the track, to the international music press that were raving about it. It even translated to the German underground, with Poker Flat licensing it for Steve Bug's 'Bugnology' compilation. Like someone that goes bowling for the first time and gets five strikes and a turkey, Justin couldn't really have hoped for a better entrance.
Feeding off the energy of the San Francisco underground and mentored by fellow super producer Claude VonStroke, Justin was intrinsically involved with the development of dirtybird records, appearing on its first four releases. Justin was soon ready to take flight, releasing a string of solo EPs which flaunted a very unique sound and garnered still more respect among fellow DJS and heavyweight's of the scene.?
As well as his formidable arsenal of original productions, Justin is now equally known for his collaborations with his brother Christian as The Martin Brothers, producing such hip-hop influenced hits as 'Duckface', 'Stoopit', 'Dum'. Justin has also made his mark remixing such bona fide classics as Radiohead's 'Nude', Marshall Jefferson's 'Mushrooms', and TG's 'Revox', firmly establishing himself as the man to make big tracks even bigger.
Demand for Justin's skills behind the decks has skyrocketed with his bookings schedule constantly crammed to capacity. With bookings confirmed everywhere from Piknic Electronik (Montreal), to Exit Festival (Belgrade) to Panorama Bar (Berlin), Justin's diary is reading like the dreams of a professional raver. Stateside he continues to be a regular fixture at the dirtybird events in San Francisco and beyond.
Dusky are London based musicians Alfie Granger-Howell and Nick Harriman. As comfortable writing elegant orchestral pieces or stirring piano motifs as they are jackin' house and epic techno grooves, Dusky's diverse sounds are united by the duo's singular aim – to compose electronic music with depth, soul and originality. Influenced by everything from classical and jazz to avant-garde electronica, the duo's emphasis on musical depth rather than genre restrictions has seen their compositions played by DJs as diverse as Pete Tong, Vincenzo, Zane Lowe, MJ Cole, Dubfire, Sasha and Laurent Garnier. Also existing as progressive/melodic house entity Solarity, they conceived their Dusky moniker as an outlet for their more organic, wide-ranging sounds – a deeply musical expansion of their nocturnal inspirations. Always intelligent, effortlessly intricate and often emotive, Dusky's sound glides across genres easily. With their debut single 'Lost In You' (feat. vocalist Janai) offering a soul-drenched summer house anthem, the duo's debut album 'Stick By This' was described as "an intoxicating album full of flashes of brilliance and innovation" by DJMag. With the album touching on ambient, dub, electronica and their organic take on house and techno, Dusky have quickly marked themselves out as producers with a uniquely broad appeal. As dance legend Pete Tong bigs them up on BBC Radio 1 and DJs like T. Williams and DMZ's Loefah hammer their tracks on urban phenomenon Rinse FM, the future is looking bright for Dusky.
Gorgon City are North London producers Matt & Kye. Their already distinctive sound is a logical development of the duo's individual work as RackNRuin and Foamo. Hailing from the impressive Black Butter camp (who brought you Rudimental amongst others) and due to release their debut album in 2014 as a joint venture with Virgin / EMI, the pair are one of the most exciting and hotly tipped new acts in the ever-flourishing landscape of British club savvy pop.
Gorgon City offered up a platform for the two producers to fuse the deeper sounds they've been excited by for years but until now didn't have the opportunity to explore. Polished, powerful and party-minded, their sound very quickly caught the attention of tastemakers as disparate as; Annie Mac, Diplo, Eats Everything and Mistajam with their early explorations into this new venture.
You can thank their long-standing love of jungle, house, grime, hip-hop and garage while growing up for this exciting meeting of musical minds; the sum of their many influences, inspirations and ideas. And right now they've only just scratched the surface.
The summer of 2013 paved the way for what's to come from these boys – their singles 'Real' ft. Yasmin and 'Intentions' ft. Clean Bandit made people sit up and listen. Both achieved 'Record Of The Week' on Radio 1 from Nick Grimshaw & Mistajam and Sarah Cox & Sarah-Jane Crawford respectively, with 'Real' going on to sell over 47,000 copies in the UK to date.
Their latest single ''Ready For You Love' received its first exclusive play on R1 recently as Zane Lowes 'Hottest Record in the World' and features the vocal talents of MNEK who co-wrote the track with Matt and Kye. It's a track that further establishes Gorgon City's ability in capturing stunning performances from their collaborators. MNEK's soaring soulful delivery marries perfectly with the duo's signature production touches, bringing together the beatific agility of two-step with the gravity and resonance of deep house, dropping into an instantly addictive chorus hook.
The last few months have seen Gorgon City cement their repertoire as tent-shaking favorites internationally, with festival sets at Glastonbury, Parklife, Hideout, Global Gathering, SW4 and Isle of White. They have also had an all-summer residency at Space, Ibiza with Carl Cox and Ibiza Rocks and did a one off performance for the Radio 1 Ibiza weekend. They have freshly supported Rudimental on a ten date run in various Australian arenas and full UK Academy tour this autumn.
Collaborations currently underway with Kiesza, Bipolar Sunshine, Jess Glynne, Josh Record, Vicktor Taiwo and Meverick Sabre among notable others promise much more excitement to come from the duo in the coming months and into the album for 2014.
Kidnap Kid closed last year with the accolade iTunes US 'Best Electronic Song of 2012? for his debut release 'Vehl' on cutting-edge indie, Black Butter Records. Now Kidnap Kid returns with 'So Close' as his second release on 25th March 2013 (available to download from 4th March).
Whilst creating his own award winning releases, Kidnap Kid aka Matt Relton extends his talents to remix and production duties, smashing official remixes for Emeli Sande and Disclosure, and recently co-producing tracks for Lulu James. Out of the studio, Kidnap Kid will be heading off on a 16 date US Tour in March, supporting Rudimental, TEED, AlunaGeorge & Disclosure.
With support coming from both radio and club tastemakers plus a loyal and supportive fan base, who's interaction with his recent SoundCloud upload can testify, 2013 looks to be a big year for Kidnap Kid.
Alex Metric is a British musician, DJ and producer. He has released numerous EPs, remixed artists such as Depeche Mode, La Roux, NERD, Phoenix, and Bloc Party as well as working as a producer for acts such as The Infadels, Charli Xcx and Adam Freeland.
With modern electronic music, there's sometimes a tendency to take things, shall we say, 'a little too seriously'. All too often producers and deejays get caught up so heavily in the idea of being elitist and 'underground' that they forget the idea of music altogether – that it should be built to be enjoyed by as many people as possible. This is not a criticism anyone could consider leveling at British wunderkind Alex Metric, however. As the man himself says, 'I want my music to reach far and wide. i want to take on the overground without compromising what i do and what i love." something which, had you attended any one of countless Metric deejay sets last year, or been in a dark, sweaty club where someone was playing one of his myriad tracks or remixes, you would have witnessed first hand in truly emphatic style.
Oliver have found the beating heart inside the dance machine. Whether moving bodies at the world's biggest electronic festivals, or hand-crafting digital gems in the studio, the producer / DJ duo of U-Tern and Oligee are responsible for some of the funkiest, toughest, and most diverse dance music today.
After spending years writing, producing, DJing and digging for vinyl, U-Tern and Oligee linked up in LA to forge something groundbreaking. They took their shared '80s baby tastes – relentlessly groovy R&B, boombox worthy hip-hop, soaring electropop hooks – and mashed them together in remixes for everyone from Chromeo and Foster The People to Breakbot and techno godfather Juan Atkins. Original jams like "All Night" and "Dirty Talk" (supported by dance music luminaries like Alan Braxe and Busy P) took Oliver's back-to-the-future sound even further, while high-powered collaborations with A-Trak ("Disco Nap") and Destructo ("LA Funky") brought the duo to the festival circuit, where they kept hands in the air all summer. With the release of their Fool's Gold EP Mechanical, Oliver push their hybrid sound to even funkier new horizons. The stadium worthy opener "MYB" perfectly segues into the moody strut of "Night Is On My Mind," before shifting gears with the hands-in-the-air ecstasy of "Control" and riding off into the sunset on the title track's cinematic pulse. With non-stop DJ sets on deck (complete with Oligee's live keyboard riffs) and even more new music, there's no telling where the beats will take them next. "Oliver is all over the map," says U-Tern. "But we're going to have a good time no matter what."
