About Have Gun Will Travel performs The Last Waltz
"This Florida roots-rock / Americana quintet earned critical acclaim with their 2008 debut Casting Shadows Tall as Giants, becoming an NPR favorite and getting regular airplay on PBS's Roadtrip Nation. They're like a cross between Death Cab for Cutie and Wilco, thanks partly to singer/guitarist Matt Burke's earnest, Ben Gibbard/Jeff Tweedy-like croon. His lyrics are both imaginitive and vibrant (and printed in a mock newspaper article style insert!), relating historical tales, heartfelt odes to his hometown, and clever social commentary. The outstanding playing (especially from inventive drummer Jean-Paul Beaubien and viola player Joshua Hernandez) and flawlessly detailed production on rollicking songs such as "Sons & Daughters of the Gilded Age," "Kerosene & Candlelight," and "The Ballad of Asa Dalton" further ensures this exceptional album is no sophmoric slump." - The Big Takeover.. "(HGWT) were well outfitted with striking songs and a great ensemble feel. Brothers Matt and Danny Burke front the outfit with winning personalities and solid chops. Since they played the Americana conference a couple of years ago they've made stops in Music City, so if you're into Band-like, elemental roots-and-roll, check 'em out". - Music City Roots, Nashville.. "...organic, infectious Americana Pop. HGWT's music has a refreshing immediacy to it... Excellent work, fellows." - American Songwriter.. "My album of the year, so far... All in all, an exceptional and hugely atmospheric album from a band that shows that there is still room in alt.country for experimentation." - Maverick Magazine (UK).. "a dozen catchy, clever songs... splendidly fleshed out with old-fashioned instrumentation and other organic, ambient sounds that augment the record's endearing, back-porch feel." - Metromix Tampa.. "The band crafts Americana with an edge. Taking influences from a bunch of diverse sources and channeling the whole through their own branding. The mix is infectious..." - Alternate Root Magazine.. "Top 10 contender for album of the year..exceptional atmospheric album" - The Roots of Rock (New Zealand).. "...traditional enough to attract the hardcore Americana fan yet different enough to attract those who are not normally impressed" - Discussions Magazine.. "well-written stories wrapped into pop-tinged folk and americana songs." - onechord.wordpress.com.. "Somewhere between indie pop and Americana, and teetering on that line in a way that seems fresher than usual." - brandnewkindof.wordpress.com.. "Postcards... is a masterpiece" - paperpistol.ca.. "Essential Listening" - Ninebullets.net.. "Stellar" - Tampa Bay Times..
