Jacques Offenbach’s last and only serious opera is packed with compelling melodies and dramatic tension. Hoffmann recounts the stories of the fascinating women who captured his heart: the beautiful Olympia, who turned out to be a mechanical doll; Antonia, who literally sings herself to death, and the conniving courtesan Giulietta. Hoffmann’s pursuit of romance is foiled at every turn by sinister dark figures, but his friend Nicklausse ultimately helps him find artistic salvation.
